Motoko Kusanagi, often addressed simply as The Major, is the main protagonist of the Ghost in the Shell franchise, in all its various continuities. She is the head of the assault team of the Japanese task force known as Section 9, which patrols for and works against acts of cyber-terrorism. Her body is entirely synthetic, with the only thing that makes her human being her soul, or 'ghost'. Each series explore her origin story in a different manner; some allude she was never human while others directly explain tragic events that led to her transformation.
